Tota Pulchra Es, O Maria

All fair art thou, O Maria…

There are always many levels of little Sunday joys in my life… from just being grateful to arrive for Mass on time, to actually making it through the long confession lines before Mass, to being able to hear a fantastic sermon!

Not only did all of that happen today – but to add a little cherry on top, there was a special Solemn High Mass (which I haven’t seen one at St. Francis de Sales since… I can’t remember) to start our novena in preparation for the feast of the Immaculate Conception!  What a glorious Sunday!

Our Canon reminded us of the importance of preparing for this special feast day.  The Blessed Virgin Mary is our spiritual mother – there is nothing she wants more than to lead us to her Son; and what a powerful intercessor she is for our sanctity!  Further, she is a perfect example for us to imitate in our daily lives and fulfill the graces which she asks for us.  Take this novena and upcoming feast day to venerate, invoke, and imitate Our Blessed Mother!

Novena Prayer to the Immaculate Conception

O Virgin Immaculate, who wast pleasing in the Lord’s sight and didst become His Mother, look graciously upon the wretched who implore thy mighty patronage.  The wicked serpent, against whom the primal curse was hurled, continues none the less to wage war and to lay snares for the unhappy children of Eve.  Ah, do thou, our blessed Mother, our Queen and Advocate, who from the first instant of thy conception didst crush the head of our enemy, receive the prayers that we unite single-heartedly to thine and conjure thee to offer at the throne of God.  That we many never fall into the snares that are laid for us, in such wise that we may all come to the haven of salvation; and in the midst of so many dangers may the holy Church and the fellowship of Christians everywhere sing once more the hymn of deliverance, victory and peace.  Amen.

English Translation:

All fair art thou, O Mary, all fair art thou, and stain does not exist in thee.  How lovely, how sweet in its delights, thy conception unstained.

Come, come from Lebanon, Come, come from Lebanon; Come, come, thou shalt be crowned!

Thou goest forth like the dawn exceedingly rose-colored, thou bringest the joys of salvation, through thee risen is Christ our God, The sun of Justice, o gleaming portal of light.

Come, come from Lebanon…

Like a lily amidst brambles; among the daughters so are thou, O Virgin blest. Thy shining raiment like snow is white, even as the sun is the face of thee.

Come, come from Lebanon…

  1. This is one of my absolute favourite hymns! I look forward to it every year. Might I suggest a better version though? :)

    I couldn’t agree more!

I’m not sure you can swing it or not, but usually…usually the First Friday evening Mass is a Solemn High as we are able to get some attritional manpower from Kenrick Seminary.

I don’t know why anyone would want to downplay Our Lady’s role.

Oooh! Really?! Wow – it’s been nearly a year and a half since I’ve been to 1st Friday Mass at SFdS! (Darn Atlantic Ocean getting in the way :P) I haven’t been able to make it recently since I’m working out in O’Fallon – but maybe I’ll make a special effort soon!

  3. So beautiful! Thanks for posting this. _()_
